In March 2026, an international scholarly conference will be held on the occasion of the 27th Magdeburg Telemann Festival.
The Telemann conferences, which are held every two years, have so far focused on specific topics such as Telemann’s work in courtly and urban contexts, his relationships with poets and composers, the compositional characteristics of his music, his engagement with particular genres, the reception history of his works, and questions relating to sources and dissemination. The aim was to explore specific issues in depth.
For the coming year, we extend a call for free papers. This is linked to the idea of expanding the breadth of research methodologies, and to the express desire for interdisciplinary approaches to Telemann as a central actor in eighteenth-century cultural life. Not least, we hope to encourage new impulses for Telemann research. Contributions on topics relating to current Telemann research are also welcome. We look forward to the participation of young scholars in particular.
Presentations and the following discussion are limited to a total of 30 minutes. We can promise you an honorarium of 150 EUR in addition to travel expenses (according to Germany’s Federal Travel Expenses Act), including up to a three-night stay in Magdeburg. Publication of the conference papers is planned in the series “Telemann-Konferenzberichte” (Georg Olms-Verlag).
Scholars are invited to submit a (working) title, an abstract (maximum 3,000 characters with spaces), and a short academic CV (all as Word or PDF documents) by May 15, 2025 to info@telemann.de.
We reserve the right to decide whether to include presentations in the conference programme and will inform you of our decision by July 1, 2025.
