Handel’s Italian texts and his librettists / Free Papers
International academic conference on the occasion of the Handel Festival in Halle an der Saale, June 10 and 11, 2025
In 2025, the Handel Festival in Halle an der Saale will be held under the motto “A breath of fresh air. The young Handel in Italy”. The International Academic Conference held as part of the Festival will take this as an opportunity to take a closer look at the Italian texts set to music by Handel – also in his later career – and his contacts with Italian literature and lyricists. In a roundtable on 11 June, chaired by Prof. em. Dr. Reinhard Strohm (Oxford), questions of critical edition, translation and digitization of the texts will be discussed in more detail.
Further contributions on this subject as well as on Handel’s travels in Italy and the librettists and translators with whom he collaborated are desirable, also beyond the Italian-language texts. The conference would also like to include comparisons with other 18th century composers and their libretti and librettists. Finally, there will also be an opportunity to present the latest research findings from Handel research to a scholarly audience in free papers.
The organizers invite interested researchers to participate in the conference with a 25-minute presentation and ask for an application with a proposed topic and abstract by 31 October 2024. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered for the conference days.
