The International Handel Research Prize 2021 was awarded at a Zoom conference to
Teresa Ramer-Wünsche, Halle (Saale), for her dissertation on the subject of
“Georg Friedrich Händels Parnasso in festa. Historisch-kritische Edition und Einzelstudien zur Werkgenese”.
Halle (Saale), 31 May 2021
The International Handel Research Prize is valued at € 2,000 and is awarded
with the kind support of the Saalesparkasse Foundation.
In awarding the prize, the jury appreciates this work as a substantial and important contribution to Handel research. Parnasso in festa is a work by Handel that has been underestimated up to now because of its subject matter and compilatory character, but which, when examined in detail, offers informative starting points for research. Teresa Ramer-Wünsche has handled the editorial problems of this difficult work very well, with scholarly precision and musical competence, and has also arranged and presented the confusing source material in such a clear and comprehensible way that the reader finds it easy to understand. In the studies of the second part, the author presents, among other things, detailed studies on borrowing practice with regard to the change from English to Italian, which is still largely a desideratum in research.
The laudation for the prize-winner was held by the Heidelberg musicologist Prof. em. Dr. Silke Leopold, Handel Prize laureate 2019 and member of the jury. You can find the text of the laudation here (in German only).
Greetings were delivered by Dr Jürgen Ude, Staatssekretär in the Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Digitalisierung des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt, Magnificence Prof. Dr Christian Tietje, Rektor der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Prof. Dr Friedemann Stengel, Geschäftsführender Direktor of the Interdisziplinäres Zentrum für Pietismusforschung and Dekan of the Theologische Fakultät of the Martin-Luther-Universität, as well as Dr Jürgen Fox, Vorstandsvorsitzender of the Saalesparkasse.
